EtG (ethyl glucuronide)

A conjugated metabolite of ethanol used to detect prior alcohol consumption in abstinence-monitoring contexts.

Last updated:

EtG is a minor metabolite of ethanol that can be detected in urine for up to ~80 hours after drinking ends. It is widely used in abstinence-monitoring programs (e.g., recovery, court). EtG can be triggered by incidental alcohol exposure (hand sanitizer, mouthwash) in some circumstances; programs use accompanying EtS measurements and threshold guidance to interpret results.
